in the next few years donald trump succeeds in proving that obama's birth certificate's a fraud, how will that affect the ability to govern the country? no, no. i guess what i'm kind of struck by is we're talking about now few days away from the second inauguration, what are the big themes to define the obama term and seems to me maybe more than we have seen in the recent past, this second term really, the basic contours of the second term set in place. it is this fight over what the safety net is, what the balance between spending cuts and revenue increases should be in terms of dealing with the deficit. that's been the battle that's waged since early 2011 and republicans grabbed control of the house. they have the house for two years and feels like more of a ceremonial second inaugural than usual. >> yeah. and i think he's going to have a very tough -- toure was right saying i have a limited idea of how much to get done in this term. lbj in 1965 had had the largest landslide in history, more democrats in congress than any other time in the 20th century except for roosevelt and told

to war with that country. since the first option is extremely unlikely and the second extremely unattractive, the obama administration needs to see if there is a path through which it can pressure iran to make a deal. in a thoughtful essay in the current issue of "foreign affairs" the columbia scholar jurvis points out that this kind of coercive diplomacy, at least from washington, has rarely worked. he points out in panama, 1989, iraq, 1990, serbia, 1998, afghanistan, 2001 and iraq, 2003, washington tried sanctions pressure and the threat of force to get leaders to change course, it didn't work. and washington had to make good on its threat to go to war. with north korea, coercive diplomacy also failed, but in this case, washington decided against military action choosing, instead, to contain the regime. making coercive diplomacy requires a mix of threats and promises. with regard to iran, the administration has made the threats plenty of times. with clarity and credibility. but while the sticks have been handled shrewdly, the carrots have not. the united states is unable to de

is barack obama, and the presidency, which is the highest ranking officer of our country. and i think that is what they don't realize is they're disparaging the office that basically leads not only the country but the free world, and when we start talking about how are they going to negotiate comprehensive immigration reform, they're going to send vice president biden. that's great, but the republicans need to understand that in order for them to pass comprehensive immigration reform, they're going to need to have a coalition of republicans and diversity within the democratic party on both sides. i think colin powell said it best. colin powell, a republican that has served on several administrations, he's tried to shepherd the republican party into a new era, and it's not a matter of just touting one person of color every so often for the republican party. american voters understand when someone is not being authentic and i think not only do they have a diversity problem, they have an authenticity problem. >> professor, to her point, colin powell took issue with some of the racially c

of the subjects that does not come up is how many legislators -- we heard president obama and vice president biden looking at their relationship, but the fact is, these countries have many ways in which they see the world together, and there are differences. but there is a lot of pressure in the town not to talk about the differences. i think that is what judge cable is getting at. the other, that disturbed me about israel vetting candidates, israel is not the vetting candidates. the deputy foreign minister of israel has issued very strong, solid comments supporting him, saying he is a friend and that he supports his decision making and that he does not have a problem with his nomination. people trying to imagine the israeli government's opinion on this, why not look at them. there are some issues laid out, but i do think it would be wrong to settle is real with comments that it government leaders have not made. guest: steve is right. i would say that that clip that iran does get back to this theme with the senate career, making the israeli-palestinian issue central to the middle east policy. i th
